But... She Looks So Much Better Fat!

Yesterday I wrote about Katie Hopkins and her mission to gain weight and then lose it again, to show how easy it is! The article had an amazing response - THANK YOU! And one of my busiest blog days ever, amazing!

Anyway, as you would expect from an article like this it got a lot of comments everywhere, but I have to say not all of them made me smile. As ever, I know that most of these comments come from a good place & people are simply rallying together to fight this bully and really that can only be positive, but I didn't like it!

She Looks So Much Healthier Fatter

Katie Hopkins has gained just over 3.5 stone and in her own words has gone from underweight to overweight (I don't know her BMI or anything so I can't judge that), so I can only take what she has said on the subject. However, what I read several times yesterday is 'she looks so much healthier fatter', which surely goes against what lots of us strive for? I have read time and time again larger people writing that they do not want people to judge their health just by the way they look, after all what do you know about someone's health just by looking at them? Health is such a complicated process and subject and not something that you can tell just be seeing how big or how small they are? Yes, she looks bigger but I can not agree that she looks healthier.

She Looks So Much Better Fatter

Looks are subjective and most of us would rather be seen for more than just the size of our waistband - so why should it be different for Katie Hopkins? It is fine if you think she is nicer looking with more weight on her, but you should remember that how good someone looks is subjective and personal - what you think looks good isn't the same across the board. Does being fatter or thinner make her 'better'? Not at all!

She Looks Normal Now

What is normal? Who are we to judge who looks normal and who doesn't? The only thing we really know about Katies weight gain is that she now looks fatter. Is fatter more normal? Does that mean anyone who shared Katies old weight/height statistics doesn't look normal? What an odd concept!

I am not a Katie fan at all but I don't believe in fighting fire with fire. Just because she wants to judge us on the way we look because of our weight that doesn't mean that we should do the same. Let's fight her with education and tell her she is wrong - but we won't do that by using insults or non-factual statements about her body like she does ours!

I Hate Fat People For Making Me Do This

I know, I know.. Another blog post about Katie Hopkins. And yes, I know I shouldn't be giving her any more attention but I am sorry I can not sit back and let her talk her absolute nonsense knowing that her words and actions are damaging.

So - Today Katie Hopkins gave her first TV interview on This Morning since gaining just over 3.5 stone for a new TV documentary she is recording. Apparently the idea is that she is going to show how you gain weight and how easy it is to lose it. She wants people to stop making excuses about their weight and lose it just as easy as she is supposedly going to from the 8th September.

On the sofa Katie did look bigger, but then when you gain 3.5 stone that is to be expected. However, in my opinion the whole interview was like a one woman pantomime! She was breathless when she talked and held her hip as she sat, like sitting on a sofa was so hard for her now she is fat. (She is in the region of 11 stone now)... I can assure you that as someone who weighs quite a bit more than Katie - sitting on a sofa and having a conversation does not make me breathless. We can see that she looks fatter, she does not need to put on over exaggerated symptoms to show 'how hard' life as a fat person is!

Thanks to http://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/2014/09/01/katie-hopkins-this-morning-weight-gain-three-stone_n_5746866.html?utm_hp_ref=uk-entertainment&ir=UK+Entertainment
In a clip from the TV show, she cried about how much she had eaten in one day (apparently 6500 calories a day) she said "I hate fat people for making me do this", however I can assure that the feeling is quite mutual.

Fat people did not make her accept money for making a documentary on fat people, we did not make her eat more than normal and gain weight on purpose nor will we make her need to lose it. Fat people did not ask her to go on a one woman crusade to 'educate' us into changing our bodies or to sit on TV and tell us that our bodies are incapable of good.

Katies TV show is about not making excuses for being fat, but it is people like her that make fat people feel that they need to make excuses for their body. It can be hard living as a fat person in a thin world. It can be even harder to live in a fat body and say "I love by body just how it is and I do not want to change it".

Instead people like Katie Hopkins make people feel like we need to excuse our bodies for being how they are - so people turn to health excuses, making sure people know that even though they're fat they eat well or exercise lots, they're fat because of stress or they're going to start a diet next week and lose all the extra weight they now have.

The truth is that if you're fat, THAT IS OK!

You shouldn't have to feel like you need to reassure people about your life choices or let them know you intend to change it. It is programs like this and the general media pressure to have a small body that make people think that they need to excuse their body - BUT YOU DO NOT!!

Love the skin you're in and let others know you love it to. It is your body and you do not need to excuse it away!

Why Are We Inviting Katie Hopkins Into OUR World?

Yes, I know - I have blogged (ranted) about Katie Hopkins before and the chances are I will again.

You might have heard that last weekend was the Miss British Beauty Curve pageant which took place in London. There were a few bloggers and familiar faces that took place, so I was looking forward to writing a nice piece this week about peoples experiences and what people thought of their day. Sadly I couldn't make it but I intended to talk lots of people about it...

And then I saw this...

Photo from http://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/2014/07/28/miss-british-beauty-curve-competition-norfolk-crown-pictures_n_5627131.html
Yes, that is Katie Hopkins at the Miss British Beauty Curve competition. A lady who swears she wouldn't hire a fat person, who has talked about fat bodies making her feel ill and making detrimental comments about larger ladies in swimming costumes at a previous beauty pageant she attended (See the article about all of that here) at ANOTHER plus size pageant!

And then I heard that not only did she attend but she was INVITED! Not only was she invited but she was there as a JUDGE!! Her... the lady who is judgemental about plus size bodies nearly every single of the week (or so it seems) being employed (in whatever capacity, obviously I don't know the ins and outs of her contract/agreement) to judge ladies who were entering a competition as a part of a SAFE SPACE like a plus size event!

This isn't the first time Katie Hopkins has attended an event. I heard a few weeks ago that she was at Big Girls Paradise in London - a BBW night club! The organisers insist that they did not know she was coming - yet she was invited in (I assume she did not pay the same entry fee as everyone else) and had her TV cameras with her - how lovely!

Can we really justify inviting a lady who sends tweets like this, to plus size events?

I understand that Katie Hopkins is controversial, I get that her bread and butter is speaking out loud about issues the main stream media want us to talk about an I know that she has a reputation of being a 'bitch' to uphold! What I do not understand is why we're inviting her into OUR safe spaces? We have to put up with lots of her unavoidable detrimental main stream media articles but why are we going out of our way to give her space in the places that we're supposed to feel most comfortable?

These plus size events are a little bit of room away from the rest of the world where we don't always feel the most comfortable we could be - or at least for some people anyway - Surely inviting the bullies to tea is defeating the object of creating these safe havens in the first place?

What do you think - Is it good that we're inviting her in to try and educate her or should we shut the door and keep our safe spaces safe?

Katie Hopkins Attends Plus Size Awards - Thoughts?

In case you didn't know - the Miss BBW International and Plus Size Awards took place in Central London last night. I go to a few events arranged by the team who put this together, but sadly I could not afford the ticket price and therefore did not (could not) attend. However, to be honest with you I am quite glad I didn't.

I found out a few days before that Katie Hopkins had been invited to the awards to collect a 'Cream Cake Award' for being unsupportive of the plus size industry. Seeing as the event was to celebrate plus size fashion, designers, writers and general advocates, I was just surprised she had been invited to such an event, even if for a negative award.

What flabbergasted me even more last night was when I saw Gemma Collins at the awards, next to Katie Hopkins proclaiming what a "nice lady" she was... This was about 10 minutes before Kate Hopkins tweeted that fat women should change for the better.... #Ironic #YesIUsedAHashTagInABlogPost

I wonder if Gemma Collins still thinks Katie is such a nice lady?

To be honest, I was upset and angry that she would tweet something while at the actual event. If she doesn't like fat people, that's up to her - but why attend an event for POSITIVITY and bring it down with such hurtful thoughts while still in the building?

And then I saw this...

I get that Katie Hopkins makes a career out of being a bitch - I hope that she is a character rather than actually being a bullying, racist, child hating woman  - but who knows!

What I don't get is why she was allowed to tweet such drivel while AT THE EVENT! These women have taken a massive step to get up in a room full of people and show off their bodies - how dare someone ridicule them? These plus size events are set up to celebrate our bodies, our confidence & as a safe haven to recognise achievements... Even if you don't agree with plus size, or awards, or pageants - why would you come into a room where this is happening, just to put down the women who are taking part? ITS BAFFLING!

When she sent tweets like this before the event - surely people realised it would only end in belittling and bullying?

Anyway, I sent quite a few angry, ranty tweets last night - as did a few others. A couple of mine were picked up by Katie Hopkins and Retweeted - which lead to a flurry of new twitter followers and of course some interesting replies - including 'insulting' me by calling me a fat lesbo & asking if I have normal size friends... blah, blah blah... because fat is obviously as insult!

However, what also surprised me was a few tweets I got telling me that I was over reacting, that Katie Hoping was right, that I should just ignore her thoughts, that I should just walk away, block Katie, not saying anything at all etc etc.

So anyway... The whole point of this bumbling, ranty blog post is that I would love to hear your points of view! Are you angry that Katie Hopkins that attended or should she have been allowed to go? Were the twitter gang right to tweet about the event, or should it have been ignored? I could not have kept quiet about it, or ignored bullying but I would love other peoples thoughts and feelings on it!

If you were there - I';d love to know what it was like, did you talk to her? Were people in general talking about it on the night? Did anyone approach her?

Thanks so much - enjoy your Sunday!
