Starting April with something a little different - a guest post by the lovely Violet Glenton!
I’ve been blogging for 5 years under my current website now. Before this I blogged under 2 other websites, one on Art and another about travel. Throughout the years I’ve learnt a lot about things you should know before you start a blog or whilst beginning one and I’ve put together this little list to help.
Here’s 5 things you should know before you get into blogging.
Not everyone will love your work
It’s true! When you start writing, you usually want other people to read and find your work. Here’s the kicker though, you won’t be everyone’s cup of tea. Oh and that’s ok! It took me years to realise that as long as I was happy with the content I was putting out there, that would be the biggest thing. Your audience will find you and the stars will align.
Consistency is key
Whenever I talk to my family about blogging, it seems to be laughed off as some easy thing. I assure you that in order to build a successful blog, consistency is key. When the stats are low and the content isn’t exactly as you’d hope, you have to push through. Keep showing up and writing.
Self-Host will change your game
I didn’t go self-hosted until my 3rd year of blogging and I wish I’d have done it sooner. Being self-hosted will allow you to have so much more flexibility and control over your website. Have a little look into it and you’ll find your mind is blown!
You don’t have to be perfect
Ok so you’re not the best writer? That’s ok! Feel your photography isn’t as good as others? Don’t worry about it. You do not have to perfect. We’re all human and I can guarantee you’ll find grammatical errors, spelling errors and more on my own website. Try not to overthink it.
If you have fun, you’ll never get fed up
Most importantly, have fun with it. If you’re having fun, you won’t get fed up or bored. Remember the main person to keep happy is yourself and you have full control over how you do that. So if you want to write about a topic other’s haven’t covered, then that’s great! Do it!!! You never know, you might have just found a niche audience for yourself.
I hope this gave you some ideas into what you should think about before you start blogging. Keep writing!
