The Importance of Plus Size Events And Why YOU Should Attend

When you think about it, we tend to do our hobbies in groups  - because it's more fun that way. You read about hiking groups, trainspotting friends, whole conventions dedicated to comic books and even holidays where you can go with like minded people. That is why, I find it quite surprising that I only attended my first 'plus size event' a few years ago.

Fair enough, being plus size probably isn't considered a hobby in the same way that collecting stamps might but it is a massive (pun intended) part of my life. So, it makes sense that I share that with others and I am beyond grateful that I found a way to do that.

Don't get me wrong blogging is amazing and the social media network I have discovered is life changing but there is nothing quite like hanging out with people in real life. These are people who know a little about what it is like to live in a body like mine - they're open minded and just as importantly can share shopping tips with me - what's not to love?

Over the past couple of years I have attended a number of plus size events and I have come away with a warm fuzzy feeling every single time. There is something empowering about seeing women of all shapes and sizes in a room come together to support each other. From walking on the catwalk, to swapping dresses, discovering new fashions and learning about body confidence these events have a little bit of everything.

All of the events (Style XL 2014 and 2015, Curvy Con, Plus London, Plus North to name a few)  have been arranged in different ways and they have all bought something a little different to the table. However, they have all left me feeling fantastic!

Sharing drinks, dinner, hotel rooms, catwalks and even bras with these women make me realise that I am a small part of something wonderful. We all know that sometimes the world isn't the kindest to us and perhaps sometimes we aren't as kind to ourselves as we should/could be. I am part of a world that is changing this - a real force in the face of the media that tells me constantly that my body and I are wrong.

But then I attend one of these events and brands are supportive, women with bodies like mine are walking catwalks in their underwear, they're laughing, chatting, smiling and looking fabulous. They're a part of the changing force in the way the world views us and that is something pretty bloody special!

I went to Style XL in Birmingham last week and it was literally amazing. If you read plus size blogs you'll have read so much about it already so I don't want to go on too much. But with catwalks, bra measuring, brand support, modelling competitions, plus size yoga, body confidence talks, dinner, wine, cocktails and much more it was an event that I will hold dear to me for a very, very long time.

So... I try to attend as many of these as possible and the next one is The Curve Fashion Festival in Manchester. Their website promises a whole host of fashion shows, seminars, talks, meet and greets and much more. The likes of Tess Holliday and Hayley Hasselhoff and many more will be there! It's smack bang in the middle of Manchester and quite honestly sounds like it's going to be a fabulous day. It's on the 26th September - Will I see you there?

If you do come to the Curve Fashion Festival then make sure you say hi but failing that please try your best to get to one of these as soon as you can. I know that living in a body you don't fully love can be tough going, but I promise you that being surrounded by a room full of positive women will be life changing!

A Big Fat Step in the Right Direction

I have blogged before and no doubt will again but the reasons to surround yourself with positive  media and influences. We are surrounded by subtle (and not no subtle) messages telling us to be thinner, more toned, healthier - better. Sometimes we read, see and hear these without even realising - but they do go in! For me, my happiness comes from surrounding myself with something different. I choose the bodies I see, the articles I read and the body positivity I surround myself with.

What struck me today is that actually there are so many different ways to do this so there are no excuses. Over the past few weeks there have been some amazing opportunities for people to take part in - and many more to come I am sure!

For example last weekend I attended an Ezine get together in Manchester. Now don't worry if you haven't a clue what an ezine is, I didn't either. However, I went along to the 'A Fat Activist Show and Tell with Kirsty of Hard Femme/Make It Work workshop' and I am so glad I did. For just oven  an hour I spent time with a whole host of fat babes generally chatting about life, issues, fat activism and sharing tips. It was great!

This weekend you could have gone along to a Fat Positive Clothes Swap in Leeds (there was also one in London last weekend). In London it was also the very first Body Positive dance class hosted by Ashleigh Owen. As I type this the video of their first ever dance has gone viral with over 10,000 hits since yesterday afternoon - amazing!

This week friends of mine in London also attended a plus size yoga class in order to record a video to promote this - and details are expected to be released too!

In April I went to a plus size night club in Birmingham and next month one takes place in Manchester. In fact on the 18th July you could choose to attend a plus size club night in London (including speed dating), one in Manchester or Style XL a plus size fashion event in Birmingham. The Curve Fashion Festival is coming up in Manchester in September too!

GET OUT THERE! Find these events, create them, join Facebook groups, join in with hashtags and anything else you can do to surround yourself with positive minds and bodies I promise you - it's worth it!

So, what are you going to be doing??

It's Just A Curvy Convention With Voyeuristic Intention

On Saturday I attended the very first Curvy Convention in London and I have to say that I had a great day!

As ever I expect there to be a barrage of blogger reviews and photos online so I don't want to talk too much about the day, because I think you can read that anywhere! I have to say though, that the day was much better than I expected, for the first ever one it did great. One thing I would say is that the range of models they used was brilliant - I am sure you'll see in everyone's photos that there were short, tall, all sizes, ages and colours which was fantastic. I felt it was a shame that the largest model was a size 26 I would love to have seen the brands showcasing their items in all of the sizes they sold - IE a size 32. But as I mused over the event yesterday I wondered if there were other 'representations' that were missed which I didn't notice because I was too busy thinking about myself. But overall, the range of models was noticeably varied and fantastic!

The Sense of Community

I joke about attending the Curvy Convention with voyeuristic intention, but it is a little like that. There are not many places you can go where you can see hundreds of women who look just like you! I love that I can lust over dresses and ask people where they got them from, with a strong chance that I will be able to wear it too! Watching catwalks, getting up close and personal with brands and chatting to the people who make and sell you your clothes is fantastic. You can speak to them about what you would like to see and they can tell you about their plans it's brilliant.

Me and the Topsy Curvy Girls, Blogger Babes, Lucia, myself and Kat (Thanks for the pic!)

I wrote a long soppy post on Facebook last night, but I really want to repeat it here.

I always feel lucky for the inspirational people I have in my life - but then I remember I put myself there. Rather than listen to prejudices and the media about my body and lifestyle choices I sought out a community that simply says 'it's ok to be you'. And I tell you now, those 5 words are so powerful. I spent yesterday surrounded by amazing plus size women showcasing fashion - not just clothing options but real, forward thinking fashion for fat bodies. You can tell me it's not needed or wrong but hundreds of women in that room will tell you differently. Being in a room of women who lift each other up (so many people coming up to me about ‪#‎wearethethey‬) is amazing. I then spent the evening drinking rum, tequila and sambuca in a room full of people who I would never have met if it wasn't for this funny little fat world we've worked hard to carve for ourselves. Feeling a bit soppy but the point is don't ever feel that because you don't fit in that you are wrong. Instead find (or build) a community of people who think just like you - it'll change your life. Possibly still drunk but #wearethethey and we're stronger than Jamelia's words

Lucie Fat Beauty, Caroline Curvy Wordy, Sam Fatty Boom Tatty and Georgina She Might Be Loved

The truth is that the community WE HAVE made is fantastic. We have come together to create something special and yes, we can't all arrange events but the fact that we travel to attend them, work together to promote them and generally get together to make them work makes me so happy. It might just be a few times a year but these events are fantastic and I can only hope that everyone has a chance to find something just as special in their lives! I can't wait to go back to Curvy Con next year!

See you at Style XL?

Spending My Weekend in Style (XL)

I have spoken before about the merits of plus size blogger events and how much I enjoy them. Style XL is taking place in the Midlands once again this summer so I thought I'd let you all know. I went to the very first Style XL last year in Leicester and had a brilliant time! This year it's a 2 day event at the Paragon Hotel in Birmingham and it looks like there is plenty planned!

I don't want to talk too much about is going on at Style XL, because for me it's the whole experience that is important. However, you can expect catwalks, stalls from your favourite brands, a Model Xl Final, body confidence workshops and much more. See the Style XL website for all the details!

Whenever I have attended these events, for me the best bit has been hanging out with fellow blogger (and non blogger) babes. I just know that the weekend is going to be filled with positivity and support - you will come away feeling empowered!

Leah has been kind enough to give me a discount code for you lucky beggars! Get your ticket for all 3 events for just £15 using the code DIAAPTK15. Get your tickets from here.

It takes place on th 18th and 19th July in Birmingham, I'll be there - will you?

Plus North Review - A Different Perspective!

First of all let me tell you now - Plus North was AMAZING! A different perspective just means I am going to review it in a different way to most people, just because I like to be difficult :D

I have spoken before about the importance of surrounding yourself with the right type of media. It can be tough living in a body that doesn't fit the media version of perfect that so many of us are force fed, often without us realising it. It's up to us to change that and surround ourselves with something new - an alternative version of good, so that we can change the influences our brain sees as positive.

Which leads me on to Plus North - an event which oozes inspiration. If you haven't attended Plus North before, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE make sure you go next year, there is literally nothing quite like it. I have no doubt that over the next few days there will be bundles of reviews and photos posted, so I wanted to share something different with you.

Photo thanks to Plus North. Some of the blogger babes on Sunday

I have to tell you that being in a room full of women that are strong and confident is amazing. When you can see plus size fashion being modelled on actual plus size women it is just perfect. When you see those women laughing together, sharing stories, supporting eachother, wooping, clapping and cheering for each other it gives you that sort of warm fuzzy feeling. Talking to brands and being able to tell them what you want from fat fashion and where you think they are going wrong is a crazy sort of liberating - Imagine being able to go into Asda and tell them what's wrong with their bread, it's amazing!

(c) Plus North
You can get measured, try make up, have your photo taken, browse clothes, buy clothes, win prizes or simply sit and enjoy a drink - all in the surroundings of plus size women who just like you fight the media's idea of a perfect body and live a happy, loving life. I know it sounds a bit cliche, but there is nothing quite like seeing someone like you living the life you would like for you to see that you can be fat (*plus size, bbw, larger, cuddly, curvy...) and happy because those people ARE DOING IT!

That is without the almost startling concept (for me at least) that maybe plus size fashion isn't quite as limited as it once was. I saw hundreds of women at this event, all looking AMAZING in different outfits across three different events (Saturday day, Saturday evening and Sunday day), which just goes to show that over the years plus size fashion has really improved - definitely steps in the right direction at the very least!

Plus North had its 3rd Annual event in Leeds this year - with fashion shows, brand talks, blogging tips, pub quizzes, raffles and an after party that was beyond fun. All this was alongside ladies you see on Instagram, read the blogs of, chat to on Twitter and generally nosey on their lives - it's amazing! I have everything crossed that there will be a Plus North 2015 and if there is, make it your mission to be there!
