Engagement Ring Samples Don’t Fit? What to Ask

November 2, 2026 by Debz Louise Leave a Comment

Trying on an engagement ring is meant to help you decide whether you like it. That becomes rather difficult when the sample won’t go on your finger. Holding it beside your hand is a poor substitute for being able to wear it. It can also take the shine off a visit you were looking forward to.

What If the Engagement Ring Sample Won’t Fit?

You deserve a fair chance to assess a design you actually like, rather than choosing only from whichever samples happen to fit. Keep your favourite on the shortlist while you ask what can be supplied in your size.

Engagement Ring Samples Don’t Fit

Keep your favourite in the conversation

If an oval cut diamond ring in Lily Arkwright’s natural-diamond collection has caught your eye, send the design reference when you enquire about sizing. Explain that you want to try that outline and band style, rather than simply any ring that goes on.

Be specific about what you want to keep: an oval centre, for example, with a plain white-metal band. That gives the consultant something useful to work with when suggesting samples.

Make the call before the journey

Before booking a visit, ask which sample sizes are available and whether there are suitable sizing rings to try. If you already know your approximate ring size, share it with the shop.

If you are also considering bespoke rings in white gold, Lily Arkwright offers private consultations in Didsbury, Manchester. Ask whether your preferred ring can be supplied in your size as an existing design, needs a modification or would involve a new design.

Ordering a different size does not automatically mean starting a bespoke commission. Establish what work is actually proposed, what it costs and how long it is expected to take. A helpful answer should explain how you will assess the fit.

A sizing ring and a display sample do different jobs

GIA recommends professional ring sizing using finger gauges. Ask to be measured for the finger and hand where you intend to wear the ring; a ring that fits comfortably elsewhere is only a starting reference.

A sizing ring can help establish your ring size. The display sample can show the centre setting, decoration and metal colour. Together, they give you more information, but a plain gauge cannot tell you exactly how a raised setting will feel.

Ask for a fitting sample with a similar band width and inside profile to the proposed ring. GIA notes that wider bands fit more snugly, and that the combined width of an engagement ring and wedding band needs consideration too. If you expect to wear both, mention that now.

When a suitable sample is available, let your hand relax. Bend your fingers and notice how the band feels beside them. Explain any rubbing or awkwardness while you are there. There is no prize for saying it is fine when it isn’t.

If there is no suitable fitting sample, ask whether one can be brought in for another appointment. If the shop cannot offer a practical way to assess the fit, you can continue looking elsewhere.

Choose the detail you enjoy

Your ring size does not choose your stone size. A small centre on a simple band may be exactly what you want; so might a prominent stone with diamonds around it. Ask to compare the designs that interest you, without making “slimming” your brief unless that is something you personally want.

For example, an oval solitaire keeps the focus on one centre stone. A halo adds a visible border around it. Look at where that border finishes across your finger once you have a suitable sample to try, then decide which arrangement you enjoy.

If the only wearable sample is far more decorated than your favourite, say so: “This helps me understand the fit, but I still prefer the plainer band.” You can appreciate a useful comparison without changing your mind about the design.

Know what will arrive before you order

Ask whether the ring will be made in the agreed size or whether an existing ring will be resized. Find out how the finished version may differ from the sample, including its band dimensions and any decoration that continues around the finger.

Do not leave all the sizing questions until after delivery. GIA points out that some designs, including rings with stones around the whole band, are difficult to resize. Confirm the adjustment options for the particular engagement ring, along with charges and any effect on returns or exchanges.

Engagement Ring Samples Don’t Fit

Keep the agreed size and design details with the quote. When the ring arrives, allow time to have the fit checked before a date you plan to wear it.

You can leave an appointment saying, “I still like the oval, but I need to try a similar-width band in my size before deciding.” That is a useful next step, whether it leads to another appointment or another jeweller. The decision can wait until you have a practical way to assess the fit.
