Pregnancy Complications: What You Can Do

September 18, 2018 by Debz Louise Leave a Comment

*Content Warning: Pregnancy, miscarriage, possible baby loss* For many women, pregnancy is a rollercoaster, a time of extreme highs and, sometimes, lows. There are some inevitable side effects of being pregnant – morning sickness is very common, as are cravings. Lots of women will also experience strong mood swings that they aren’t always prepared for. Most of these side effects are expected and manageable and, to some degree, are part of the experience.

Pregnancy Complications

Because most women expect some degree of weirdness from their bodies during pregnancy, they might not know whether something they are experiencing is normal or an indication of something going wrong. Generally, your body does a good job of letting you know whether something is normal or not – if it feels wrong, then you should consult with a doctor.

Here are some of the more common pregnancy complications and what you can do about them.

Don’t use this advice as a substitute for a doctor’s visit though.

High Blood Pressure

Known as hypertension, high blood pressure is caused by a narrowing of the arteries that reduces the flow of blood from the heart to your organs. As a result, your heart begins to beat harder to compensate. For pregnant women, this can reduce blood flow to the placenta.
If you already have high blood pressure, it will continue during pregnancy. For healthy women, gestational hypertension usually develops during the second half of the pregnancy. Pregnant women can take the same beta-blockers that are normally used to treat high blood pressure, just ask your doctor for a prescription.

Gestational Diabetes

Gestational diabetes is when a woman develops diabetes during her pregnancy. This occurs when hormonal changes interrupt the body’s production of insulin, which leads to glucose building up in the blood.

Gestational diabetes can be a serious condition, especially if left untreated. However, your doctor will be able to provide you with an appropriate treatment plan to manage the condition throughout the rest of your pregnancy.

Bleeding and Spotting

For the duration of a woman’s pregnancy, her periods will stop. When pregnant women notice vaginal bleeding or spotting, it can be very scary and many women assume that it is a sign of miscarriage. However, while bleeding and spotting during pregnancy should always be reported to your doctor, it is not necessarily an indication that a miscarriage is going to occur.

Reporting Complications

If you are ever uncertain about the state of your pregnancy or are concerned about symptoms you are experiencing, you should always talk to your doctor. It is perfectly natural to worry about any symptoms that arise, and no concern is too small when it comes to your health and the wellbeing of your baby. Healthcare professionals are there to support you, so don’t hesitate to seek reassurance or medical advice—your pregnancy is too important to ignore any doubts or discomfort.

If you do report symptoms to your doctor and feel that your concerns are not being taken seriously, or if a misdiagnosis or delayed diagnosis results in complications such as miscarriage or stillbirth, you may have grounds for a medical negligence claim. Medical professionals have a duty of care, and failure to meet that standard can have devastating consequences. Seeking legal advice from specialist solicitors, such as the-medical-negligence-experts.co.uk, can help you understand your rights and options if you believe negligence has played a role in your experience.

Pregnancy is both a joyous and sometimes overwhelming journey, filled with excitement but also natural concerns. If you ever feel uncertain about your symptoms or overall health, trust your instincts and reach out to your doctor. Prompt medical attention can provide reassurance, prevent complications, and ensure the best possible outcome for both you and your baby.
