What Is Composite Bonding?

An alternative to dental veneers, composite bonding is putting a very thin material directly on to a tooth in order to repair damage or chips, lighten their colour, improve uneven teeth and can even make a significant difference to your smile.

Also known as composite artistry because of the advanced techniques used, it can be a cheaper, quicker option than veneers. It is a less invasive process and is also reversible. As well as chipped and damaged teeth, composite bonding is suitable for reducing gaps between teeth, cracked teeth and can help to protect teeth that are exposed roots.

How Does It Work?

Initially, your teeth must be cleaned and checked to make sure there are no cavities or any other damage to your teeth for which composite bonding is not suitable. In some cases, you dentist may recommend teeth whitening first, particularly if the natural dentine of your teeth is discoloured. This allows for a whiter shade of composite resin to be used and avoid too great a contrast with the colour of your other teeth.

Your dentist makes up a composite bonding resin and colour matches it to the natural colour of your teeth and applies the resin to your tooth or teeth.

Once applied, the resin is shaped, sculpted and smoothed over the imperfections in your teeth, creating a completely natural look. A special ultra-violet light is shone on the teeth to help harden the resin quickly. Your teeth are finally polished to leave you with a bright, shiny smile.

Being a non-invasive treatment, there is little damage to your actual teeth and dentists can complete the entire procedure within 1-2 hours.

How Long Does Composite Bonding Last?

Unlike veneers, composite bonding doesn’t last as long on your teeth, but the benefit is that it isn’t a permanent feature, and you have a lovely smile. However, it is important that the aftercare of your teeth is carried out. This will include reducing or avoiding altogether the substances that cause staining on your teeth, such as smoking, tea, coffee, red wine and other acidic food and drink.

It must be remembered that your composite bonding layer is not as strong as your natural teeth so be careful if you are biting on foods that are hard.

With the correct care and regular check-ups with your dentist, composite bonding should, on average, last 5-8 years.

What Are The Benefits Of Composite Bonding?

Unlike veneers, composite bonding is reversible and can provide immediate results as dentists can complete the treatment in just one visit. It is a completely painless procedure without the need for injected anaesthetic or drilling. You can be walking out of your dentist visit with a lovely, bright smile the same day.

In general, it is cheaper than other cosmetic dental treatments and there is no need to have x-rays, moulds or lab work. However, you will need to look after your teeth after the process to prolong longevity and preserve the colour.
