Fact 1: Fika

An important part of all Swedes’ everyday life is fika. Fika can be roughly translated as ‘coffee break’. But it is not just that. It is almost obligatory that Swedes pause at some point during their day and they go out for a cup of coffee or tea with friends or colleagues. They drink their beverage while they’re munching on a freshly baked cake. It is extremely important to note that they don’t fika on their own because this break is their chance to socialise and bond with other people. No matter how busy they get, Swedes people take a coffee break, they fika, at least once a day.

Fact 2: Queues

When you enter a shop or an institution, look for a ticket machine. Take a ticket and wait for your number to be called so that you can be served. It is a pretty common phenomenon in most places, so do look for the machine in order to avoid any unexpected confrontations.

Fact 3: Lingonberry Jam

Swedes LOVE lingonberry jam. Lingonberry is a type of red berry. It looks a lot like cranberries, but lingonberries taste sweeter than cranberries do. There is an ample supply of lingonberries in Swedish forests. This jam is a must-have in every household as it is added to almost everything they eat. It can complete a meat-based meal or be added to desserts.

Fact 4: Etiquette

Every country has its own etiquette rules that define what actions count as polite behaviour. When it comes to how Swedes address other people, everyone uses first names even if they’re in a formal setting, like a university class or a doctor appointment. This way they show that the interlocutors are equal without caring about job titles or possible incomes. It should be noted that there are a few exceptions to this rule as if they’re addressing a judge in a courtroom, a member of the government or the royal family, they use the appropriate titles. One more courtesy rule in Sweden is that they take off their shoes before entering another person’s house.
