Tips for a Stress-Free Lead Up to Christmas

Christmas Decorations In Your House

As a kid, our Christmas decorations and Christmas tree were always a mishmash of colours, textures and decorations. We weren’t the type of family that ever really had a theme for our decorations; it was more a free-for-all all with everyone getting involved in decorating the tree – with some Christmas tunes playing in the background of course. I’m a firm believer in your home being your own space and as such, anything goes when it comes to decorations. Do you want a theme? All of your decorations in one colour? Everything looking as though it has been thrown on in a random order? Go for it! When it comes to decorating an 8.5 ft christmas tree, you can customise it however you like!

My sisters birthday is mid-December, so growing up we never put our Christmas decorations up until after her birthday, my parents keen to make sure that her birthday was kept separate from Christmas celebrations. Now she puts hers up at the end of November and I tend to wait until really near Christmas – although with 2 cats and a puppy now living with us that might be completely different this year, as Lola is a nightmare for picking stuff up and hiding it somewhere else.

Making Christmas Decorating As Stress-Free As Possible

Christmas is meant to be a fun time, although I know everyone has different opinions on what makes Christmas great. I’m a big believer in making the season work for you and not just doing what is expected if that makes you miserable. One thing that should absolutely be stress-free is decorating your house and/or tree.

  • Christmas Lights – These can be an easy way to add some festive cheer to your house because they come ready to hang, so you can just throw them up and plug them in and you’re done – it really is that easy!
  • Stockings – Even if you don’t fill a Christmas stocking, it is a really easy way to decorate. My tip would be to invest in stockings that are already decorated, perhaps with an initial on. Put these away nicely when you’ve finished with Christmas and just get them out again each year, simple.
  • The Tree – The tree is the one thing that causes stress for most people, as they strive for perfection and want it to look just right, which is not a thought process I subscribe to at all. Don’t worry about it being perfect, just that it looks how you want. You can invest in some decent decorations so that when you pack them away you know that they will be easy to unbox next year.

 Buying Christmas Presents

Sometimes, the pressure of buying presents can be too much – as we wander shops desperate to buy something for Aunty Sue, with no idea of what she really likes but an obligation to buy her something. Three for two gift sets might be nice, but let’s be honest they’re a bit of a cop-out when it comes to buying gifts for your loved ones.

As you know if you have read my blog before, I’m a fan of thoughtful, personal and functional presents – I hate buying gifts just for the sake of it, I want to be certain it is going to be something that they like and is unique.

One idea I have come across this year is handmade wooden items from Germany, which are really lovely and include several types of unique gifts. I have seen them before when visiting Manchester and Birmingham Christmas markets and they really are beautiful. What I like about them as a gift is that they’re not something you have just stumbled across at Debenhams, so the person you are buying for will know that you have put thought into buying something different.

A gift idea that is very kid-friendly or for your friends who love to travel is an authentic German cuckoo clock. There are many traditional wooden styles available but also cool modern cuckoo clocks for those who have a more sleek and modern design aesthetic. Or if you have friends that love beer, a beer stein would be an excellent choice. The Christmas decorations like candle arches, nutcrackers, Christmas pyramids and incense smokers are traditionally brought out each year to decorate the home and get everyone in a festive mood. Wooden gifts pack away really easily, so they’re just as easy to get out the next year to put on display.
For many people, eco-friendly products and sustainability are becoming more important, so gifts that are handmade from wood really work. And buying online from a small company that values this craftsmanship is good for everyone. A hot tip: if you sign up for their email list you’ll get 10% off your purchase which is super helpful.
Just get organised with your present buying early, so that you know you’re going to avoid running around the shops when the time is nearly here desperately trying to find a present while bashing throw the crowds of other people trying to do the same.

If you have any tips for a stress-free lead up to Christmas I’d love you to share them below!
