What Are Wedding Favours? Everything You Need To Know

July 1, 2021 by Debz Louise Leave a Comment

There are lots of things to think about when you are planning a wedding, from the venue to dresses, food, entertainment and also wedding favours! Despite them not being top of many peoples lists of things to plan, they are actually a very important part of the day and something that you will need to really think about what you’d like to have.

Ultimately wedding favours are a way for the couple to say thank you to their guests for attending their special day. There are lots of things that you can give as gifts for wedding favours, depending on your budget, personal taste and also theme. Traditionally they would have been small little bags, filled with sugared almonds that represented five blessings of health, wealth, happiness, long life and fertility. Many people still choose to have this traditional theme for their day, but with the choices now being endless, it’s a nice idea to be creative and think about something a little bit different.

What are wedding favours?

Wedding favours are little gifts that the happy couple leave on each place setting during the wedding breakfast for each of their guests. It’s also a nice little keepsake that people can take home and remind themselves of your special day too. If you are stuck on what to give as favours, just try to remember the main thing is that it will be something small. Usually, they are left on each place setting, so try to think of something small that can easily be placed on a place setting.

What items can you choose for wedding favours?

When choosing what to have, try to think about the theme or style of your wedding. If you have chosen to have a rustic themed wedding, then you might want to get something that’s either been handmade or something like a mini jam jar, with a personalised tag around the top. Something else that is really nice is to have mini bottles and fill them with your favourite gin or something similar. You can again have a personalised tag around the bottle to give it a nice personalised touch.

If you both love helping charities or you are looking at having a sustainable, and ethical wedding then you may want to opt for something such as a donation to charity for each person, or even for each guest you will ensure that a tree is planted.

If you want to have something sweet you might choose to have a little bag of pick and mix sweets, or even a mini glass jar, filled with sweet honey or jam. Some people also choose to have mini plants for each person, this will obviously depend on your budget, but it is something that your guests can take home with them and grow in their own homes.

How much money should you spend on wedding favours?

This really comes down to the overall budget that you have for your wedding, but the wedding favours shouldn’t leave you short of money. The amount you spend on each one will depend on your number of guests, for example, if you have a large wedding with 200 people then you won’t want to buy something expensive for each person. Just remember to spend within your limits, and get something that is personal to you both as a couple. At the end of the day, the favours are only to symbolise a small token of your appreciation.

If you are working on a really tight budget, and don’t feel that you have enough money for wedding favours, don’t let this get you down. They are not essential and if you can’t afford them, then you don’t need to have them. If you are really stuck though for money, but you really want to have wedding favours, why not call in some favours with friends and family. Perhaps see if someone you know is creative and can make you some cheap wedding favours,  or you could perhaps look at a contra-deal. Maybe you have a special talent or service that you could offer in return to a friend, for example, if you work in marketing you could offer to help your friend who is self-employed with some marketing advice, and in return, they may help you make some small wedding favours.
