Getting a new gas central heating system is something that many homeowners need to do at some point in their lives. It’s one of the bigger home improvement and maintenance jobs that we have to face, so it can feel a little overwhelming when the time comes. But once you’re aware of a few basic points, you should feel much more comfortable with the process. Here’s what you need to know about getting a new gas central heating system.

Getting a New Gas Central Heating System

Getting a New Gas Central Heating System

You need a Gas Safe engineer

If you need a new gas central heating system or just a new gas boiler, you can’t just pick any plumber to do it. It needs to be installed by someone who is registered as Gas Safe. This will typically be a heating engineer but some skilled tradespeople work as plumbers and Gas Safe heating engineers. It’s wise to choose someone local to your area, that way they’re never too far away if you get an issue with your boiler or heating.

It matters what type of boiler you get

It’s worth taking some time to look at which boiler brands are the most highly rated in terms of reliability and energy efficiency as this will save you money in the long run, even if the upfront costs are a little higher. It’s also worth checking that the boiler has a long guarantee as this is a good indication that the manufacturers are confident their product won’t break down for many years and will give you some protection if it does.

You also need to make sure you get the right size and type of boiler for your property and lifestyle. For large family homes, a 30kW system boiler and separate hot water tank may be the best set-up but a 25kW combi boiler may be better for a two or three-bedroom home. If you’re unsure, your heating engineer should be able to assess what will be most suitable for you.

You may not need to replace your radiators

It’s not always necessary to replace all of your radiators when you get a new central heating system or boiler. Radiators can last a long time, so if your existing radiators are in good condition with no signs of rust or corrosion, you may be able to keep using them. If you do keep your radiators, they may need flushing to ensure you have an efficient system. Again, if you’re unsure, your heating engineer can advise you on this.

Of course, you may not wish to keep your radiators even if they are in good condition as you may prefer to upgrade to designer radiators or underfloor heating.

You can choose to move your radiators

When you’re getting a new central heating system, the easiest thing to do is replace everything like-for-like. But this isn’t always the best option. Although this will typically reduce your upfront costs, it might leave you with an inefficient system or radiators stuck in awkward places.

By moving your radiators to better positions in your rooms, they may be more effective at heating the space. Moving your radiators can also be practical if they’re currently positioned in places that are disrupting your home’s layout. For instance, a radiator that hogs a central position on one wall can mean it stands out and prevents you from placing furniture along or in front of that wall. So, you might prefer to move the radiator to a more discreet position.

Installations can take time

Installing a new central heating system can take anywhere between a day and a week. If it’s just a case of replacing the boiler, it’s likely to take a day, possibly two. But if you need new pipework and radiators this will add to the time. Other options such as an underfloor heating system could take even longer.

Not only can it take time but there can be quite a bit of disruption. If new pipework is going in, engineers usually need to access under your floorboards, so it can be a bit messy.

You can save money without cutting corners

Aside from keeping radiators that don’t need replacing, there are other ways to save money on your new central heating system without cutting corners.

Firstly, opting to get the work done in the summer could help. There are often more boiler deals to be had during this time and some heating engineers offer better installation rates during quieter periods. But even if rates aren’t cheaper, you’ll certainly find that engineers aren’t as busy. So, you may have more choice over which installer you go for, enabling you to choose between quotes. It should also be easier to schedule the installation at a time that suits you.

Secondly, you can save money by planning ahead. Clear plenty of space beforehand or book the central heating installation for a time when you can make yourself available to move things around. If engineers can work unhindered by obstacles such as carpets and furniture, they can get the job done much quicker.
