When younger children feel overwhelmed or ‘bored’ this can result in poor behaviour and tantrums – something you definitely want to avoid. Whether you’re visiting relatives this year or having some family time at home, here are some tips on how to keep kids entertained this Christmas.

Pack Wisely
If you’re going out for the day and visiting relatives then make sure you pay attention to what you pack. Although kids will be excited to see relatives, a day away from their own house and especially from their new toys and presents can be a bit much. Allow them to take one of their new toys with them and also consider packing things like activity books to help keep them entertained throughout the door. For small children a blanket so you can pop them down somewhere for a nap is a great idea too. For kids of all ages some snacks you know they will like is also helpful!
Arrange Entertainment
Whether you’re spending time away from home or not, arranging entertainment is a must. You might think that with a pile of presents they’re going to be easily entertained but sometimes this can be a bit much and instead you want something quiet and simple that is going to keep them entertained. Christmas crafts are always a good idea and we’ve also recently been using some of the online games at the Culinary Schools website; they’re generally games that you can play quickly and easily on any tablet or smartphone – ideal for times when you’re away from home. They have lots of fun games which means that whatever your kid is into, there is going to be something that will keep them happily entertained. You can even encourage them to play educational games such as opening a restaurant – which helps to teach them just how hard this line of work can be.

Give Them Choices
Involving slightly older children in some of the choices you make is a great way to avoid meltdowns – for example, if they want to see their friends but you feel that they should come with you and visit relatives work with them to come up with a compromise. They will really respond to the fact that you have taken their needs into account and this is likely to make for a smoother day all around for everyone – and it means that everyone gets to do what they want over Christmas which is great!
