A Look At The Rising Popularity of DVLA Scams

October 12, 2021 by Debz Louise Leave a Comment

Rising Popularity of DVLA Scams  Yesterday a friend called me as she had a text from a parcel company and she couldn’t get the re-delivery to work and wanted my help. I looked at the text and could tell it was a scam – they simply wanted her to pay for a re-delivery fee for a parcel that didn’t even exist! You would think that we would be well versed on these scams by now, but that’s not the case at all. In fact, there seems to be a rise in things like DVLA scams which we should all be on the lookout for.

Rising Popularity of DVLA Scams

Update Your Profile

There is a range of emails going out to people, giving the impression that they are from the DVLA. They’re formatted like a professional email and prompt you to log into the DVLA website & update all of your personal details. The link usually takes you to a 3rd party website that captures your personal details and uses them for no good.

Car Tax Unpaid

Another email that is doing the rounds is one that tells you that your car tax is unpaid. It advises you to log in to their website (via their email) and make payment – except, the payment doesn’t go to the DVLA and you likely never needed to repay your car tax at all.

DVLA Scams

Renew Your License

A similar email comes and is likely to tell you that they need you to confirm your details – once again prompting you to share all of your personal details with a company that are going to sell them on or use them to defraud you.

If you ever get an email from a company, it is always best to go directly to the company website via a separate browser rather than clicking the link via their email, which could lead you to a website that isn’t what it pertains to be.

This means that if you are looking for something like a free number plate valuation for your next number plate purchase you should do your research and ensure you use a company that is legitimate and well regarded, so you’re not a victim of one of these scams.

When avoiding DVLA scams, always be cautious of unexpected emails, text messages, or phone calls claiming to be from the DVLA, especially those requesting personal details or payment information. The DVLA never asks for bank details via text or email, so treat any such requests as suspicious. Look out for spelling errors, generic greetings, and unofficial email addresses, as these are common signs of a scam.

If a message urges immediate action or threatens penalties for non-compliance, verify it directly through the official DVLA website rather than clicking on any links. Always ensure you’re using the official GOV.UK website when renewing licences, paying fees, or checking vehicle information, and report any suspicious messages to the DVLA to help prevent fraud
