A really weird thing happens every year, which I believe most people don’t pick up on. Every summer, especially on those days when you know the weather will be beautiful, everyone obsesses over garden furniture, barbecues, and pretty much every piece of furniture you could conceivably have outside.
I know a LOT of people who spent a good amount of time doing up their gardens at the start of lockdown last year and who would be looking to keep the trend going this summer as well. And while it’s all well and good to have a lovely garden, there is one thing people forget about; British weather. Not every day will be perfect, but because people lap up those few days where the sun has come out to say hello, big furniture stores and garden centres will go crazy showcasing nothing but things for your garden.
This places those of us looking for a good deal on home furniture in a prime position to snap up bargains. It is at this time of year where shops will have their biggest savings on a few key items you will want to know about, especially if you’ve been hovering around the idea of doing a room up but haven’t fully committed – you’re probably already wondering how to go about saving money on furniture.
To show what I’m on about, here are three key items in the home which traditionally have massive savings come summertime, and 1 area to avoid!
Saving Money on Furniture
Sofas & Chairs
You’re going to hear the word “rattan” a lot over the summer months if you follow any furniture company on your socials. You won’t hear the same level of interest in sofas & chairs, though. With a lot of big stores needing to make room for garden furniture, they’ll tend to look at existing interior furniture and discount out to make room. With sofas & chairs being so big, you can play the waiting game and bag a bargain on one. The best time to shop for them is around the bank holiday weekends at the end of May and August.
Radiators
When everyone is outside and the days are warmer, no one is even thinking about radiators. So what can radiator brands do to get your attention? Well, a big discount can come in handy. Stores like Trade Radiators will have their biggest discounts during the summer (I recommend buying a radiator online, simply because online stores are the ones in charge of delivery, i.e. not figuring out how to get a radiator in the back of your car).
Summer is also a great time to bag a deal on a radiator as many stores will push older stock into clearance. Radiator brands tend to bring out their new products in autumn when demand picks back up.
Boilers
Last, but by no means least, let’s talk about boilers. It’s something you will use the least during the summer months, and if you’ve thought an older one is on the way out, pounce on summer deals. Now, while the price of a boiler doesn’t fluctuate much throughout the year, it’s actually the savings you’ll get from hiring an engineer. Think about it, boilers and pipes don’t have problems until well into the winter, which means engineers aren’t as in demand.
Don’t believe me? Call around a few and ask for quotes, making sure to mention you’ve been talking with other engineers. Once they hear that, their quote should drop like that.
(DON’T BUY) Fridges or TVs
Before I go, I want to highlight one very big no-no at this time of year. No matter how tempting it seems, never buy a new fridge or TV in the summer. Appliance brands always launch their new products in the spring, which means the prices will be highest around June/July time. People often think they need a new fridge in the summer because they’re more prone to leaving the door open when grabbing stuff for barbecues or overloading to keep things chilled. Don’t fall for it and wait it out until TVs are cheapest, which is December time (according to WHICH).
