What Nobody Tells You About Sending Your Child Off to University

September 24, 2026 by Debz Louise Leave a Comment

Sending a child off to university marks one of the biggest changes a family goes through, and most of the advice out there stops at packing lists. Underneath the shopping trips and the countdown to results day sits a mix of pride, nerves and a real sense of loss that rarely gets mentioned until you are living through it. There is also groundwork that makes the first few weeks easier, and it is easy to overlook amid the excitement.

Sending Your Child Off to University

The emotional weight nobody quite prepares you for

Parents talk endlessly about what their son or daughter needs to pack, but far less about what it feels like to come home to a quiet bedroom. Many describe real loss in the first few weeks, even while proud of their child, and that mix of feelings can catch people off guard. Plenty recognise themselves in one father’s account of the drive home after dropping his daughter off, closer to tears than he expected, and that reaction is far more common than most admit to beforehand.

The practical jobs that make the first term easier

Somewhere between choosing a duvet cover and saying goodbye, there are a few jobs worth ticking off before term starts. Registering with a GP near campus, rather than staying on the books back home, means your child can actually be seen if they fall ill instead of waiting on an appointment two hundred miles away. It also helps if they know how to arrange a doctors note for university before they need one, so that if illness ever affects coursework, it can be sorted promptly rather than left until a deadline.

Letting them handle things you’ve always handled for them

It is tempting to sort every last detail before drop-off, from setting up bill payments to stocking the freezer for the first fortnight. Doing too much of that groundwork can leave a new student without basic skills they will actually need once you have driven away, like booking their own doctor’s appointment or reading a tenancy agreement properly. Teaching them to make an awkward phone call or cook something beyond pasta does more for their first term than any amount of last-minute packing ever will.

Knowing when to step back and when to check in

Term-time contact works best when it follows your child’s lead rather than a schedule set for your own peace of mind. Not every struggle shows up in a phone call home, and nearly one in five first-year students report a mental health condition, yet many hold back from asking for support because they worry how it will look to tutors or new friends. A regular, low-pressure check-in tends to open the door far more effectively than a barrage of questions.

What changes at home once they’ve gone

Sending your child off to university doesn’t mean your house needs to change, but the rhythm of it does, and that takes a little getting used to. Meals get smaller, the calendar empties out, and evenings carry a quiet that takes a few weeks to stop noticing. Most parents find their footing again once the first phone call home reassures them their child is managing perfectly well without them, usually somewhere around week three.
