It is no secret that energy bills are on the rise – and that the rises are expected to continue, with an increase due in October. The cost of heating our homes might well be on the rise, but that doesn’t mean we want to live without heating – instead now is the perfect time of year to look at how to improve your home’s energy efficiency.
Windows
Unless you have checked them already, your windows are most likely a source of heat loss within your home – not only that, but they could let the cold air in, most definitely something that you want to avoid. One great and affordable way to fix this problem is to look at installing window shutters. Not only do window shutters look great in just about any from in the house, but they heat to keep the draught out and the heat in – perfect for an energy-efficient home. Shutter blinds are made to measure and if you buy from a reputable firm come with a complete guide on how to install them, making life as easy as possible for you.

Floors and Ceilings
If you haven’t already insulated floors, ceilings and even your loft space then you’re a big step away from being as energy efficient as possible. Heat loss through ceilings adds a massive amount on to your home energy bill and is something that you should look to fix if you want to be energy efficient. This is an option that you can install yourself, just make sure you buy the thickest possible for the space you have and read guides to ensure that you install it properly.
Gadgets
There are plenty of gadgets that you can buy to help put you in control of the way your home uses energy. For example, Hive heating systems that allow you to turn off radiators that are not used at the click of a button. This means that you can ensure you are not paying to heat rooms in your house that simply aren’t being used. It probably isn’t worth running out and buying all new appliances, but if you are shopping for them anyway then checking their energy rating is properly recommended. It’s also worth seeing what swaps you can make – an air fryer often costs less to run than switching on the oven to cook dinner, for example.
If you have any tips for improving your home’s energy efficiency we’d love to hear them
