6 Features to Consider When Choosing a Business Laptop

September 7, 2022 by Debz Louise Leave a Comment

More businesses are operating remotely, which means there’s a higher demand for capable laptops. Choosing a laptop starts with understanding your needs, as there’s no point in paying for a computer that’s too powerful. Knowing this will help you narrow down the ever-extending market, and ultimately choose a laptop for business. To help you out, we’ve put together this short overview of computer attributes.

Processing

The processor is the brain of your computer, and it works by sending signals to hardware via the motherboard. The majority of business functions can be carried out on an entry-level AMD or Intel process – the Ryzen 5 and i5 respectively. However, if your work involves taxing processes like graphic design and 3D rendering, you will need to dig into the pockets a little deeper.

Graphics

There are two different setups for graphics – integrated and dedicated. If your work is rooted in general office work, integrated graphics should be fine. However, if you rely on highly visual software, you will need dedicated graphics. To help find out which will work for you, follow this link to read about Lenovo intel graphics.

Memory

When your computer opens programs, it consumes memory (RAM). The more programs you have running, the more RAM you will need. Again, the amount of RAM you install will depend on the work you do. For office work, we recommend using 8GB just to cover your back. Whereas, for more intensive work, you should opt for 16GB. If you’re building a computer, we suggest installing your RAM in pairs e.g., 2x 8GB RAM. Doing this means that memory is split between two sticks of RAM, which will increase your computer’s speed.

Storage

When we talk about storage, we’re referring to the capacity of your hard drive, which is where you store your files and software. Typically, a 256GB SSD will be sufficient for the majority of business work. However, for more intensive work, you may need a 1TB PCIe, which mounts directly onto the motherboard for faster access.

Operating System

Your computer will need an operating system, which lets you access software and navigate. The most common OS is Windows, which is the standard for the majority of laptops. However, if you’re an Apple fan, you will find macOS installed on their products. There’s no right or wrong answer to which you should use, but Windows provides more versatility.

Connectivity

You will likely need to connect peripherals to your devices via USB. Therefore, the laptop you choose needs to have enough ports. If you opt for a Windows laptop, you should be fine. However, Macbooks don’t have USB ports, which means you’ll need a separate hub.

Investing in a laptop for business will greatly improve your productivity. To make sure your computer is capable, you will need to pair your needs with the specs outlined above. For the majority of remote business work, an entry-level laptop will be more than capable – there’s no point in spending above your budget for features you won’t use.
