The Ultimate Guide to a Comfortable and Affordable Home Study Space

October 22, 2024 by Debz Louise Leave a Comment

Comfortable and Affordable Home Study Space – Kids can’t be in the library all day, every day, which means they need a space at home where they can study and complete assignments for their classes. Their study space should be comfortable and productive — to keep them on task. Here’s how you can make a comfortable study space at home.

Find a Cozy Nook

Before you can equip a study space with furniture, décor, and the other accoutrements your kids need to study, you need to find the right space. In an ideal world, you’d have a spare bedroom to dedicate to their studies. If that’s not an option, search for an unused nook that allows kids to close out distractions, like the corner of their bedroom, a spacious closet, or even a garage or shed.

Their study space should be away from the high-traffic areas of your home and free from diversions like televisions. Their study space should also have reliable internet access; you might need to invest in a router or extender to place near their desk if they struggle to use the web at the speed they need.

The most important attribute of their home study space is that kids can focus on their work when they use it. If they find their mind wandering when they’re supposed to be studying, you might need to relocate the study space to a different area of your home.

Support Their Studies

Kids will likely spend hours every week in their home study space for the foreseeable future, which means you need to create a space that is both comfortable and supportive. As tempting as it might be for them to curl up in bed with their laptop and textbooks, the truth is that their bodies and minds will benefit from ergonomic furniture.

There is no objectively perfect desk and chair for all students, and if there were, it would probably be unreasonably expensive. Some of the pieces with more ergonomics — which can help avoid injury and tend to be adjustable to fit all body sizes and sitting styles — often have higher price tags. However, you can save money by looking for desks and chairs second hand at thrift stores or through Facebook Marketplace.

You should definitely have kids try out their desk and chair options before buying them, or else you could waste time and money on uncomfortable furniture that doesn’t help them focus on their studies.

Creating a productive home study space for kids goes beyond just organising supplies and setting up a desk — it’s also important to consider their overall well-being. Keeping kids hydrated throughout their study sessions is key to maintaining focus and energy. Encouraging them to drink water regularly can help improve concentration and support their physical health. Incorporating small routines like this can make the study space not only a place for learning but also for healthy habits.

Set the Mood

Kids need to be in the right state of mind to study effectively, and their surroundings can help them achieve the attitude they need. While you should try to keep decorations to a minimum to reduce possible distractions, there are ways to foster a productive atmosphere in a home study space.

First, kids will need to be able to see to study. Natural light is ideal because the color and intensity are perfect for keeping kids awake and focused. Therefore, you should keep your window coverings light during the daylight hours to maximise natural illumination. When the sun sets, you might equip the study space with blue- or white-toned LED lights, which are most similar to natural daylight. However, if their study space is in their bedroom, you should have other warm-toned lights to use when their study sessions are complete so they can let their minds and bodies relax as the day comes to a close.

Next, you should try to fill their space with some noise. Silence isn’t as conducive to focus as you might expect; the brain thrives with a slight amount of sound or music, which is perhaps why so many people prefer to work in public spaces like libraries or coffee shops. There are affordable white noise machines, or you can find free videos of hours upon hours of natural sounds, instrumental music, and other sounds to improve focus.

Finally, for functional decorations in your study space, you should opt for real houseplants. The sight and smell of greenery have been found to reduce stress, and a little extra oxygen in the air can improve their brain’s performance. You might choose low-maintenance options like snake plants, ZZ plants, or cactuses, so you don’t have to worry about keeping the plants alive when kids should be focused on their studies.

You don’t need an extensive, expensive space for your children to study; you just need a few essential tools that work for them. By choosing the right space and outfitting it with productivity-boosting paraphernalia, kids will enjoy their study sessions more – and hopefully, see their grades improve.
