St. John Packing Checklist
Currency
In the Virgin Islands, postage and US currency are normally used. Most of the restaurants and shops in St. John accept Visa, American Express, and MasterCard. Carry your traveler’s checks in small denominations because the local banks do not cash stateside checks. The main banks are Scotia Bank and First Bank, which have ATMs.
Inoculations
To travel to St. John, inoculations are not required. Besides, passports are not required but are convenient unless planning to visit the British or non-US islands. It’s advisable to carry passports if you have them, and if not, a birth certificate, a voter’s registration, and a photo ID are acceptable for re-entry into America.
Airlines to St. John
It’s worth noting that St. John doesn’t have an airport. However, St. Thomas has one which is just a few minutes away. The major airlines are Delta, Spirit, United, American, Continental, and US Air. Once you arrive, there are numerous taxis outside the baggage claim area.
Direct them to the Red Hook ferry dock, where you’ll board a St. John ferry for Cruz Bay every hour from 6 am to midnight every day and even on holidays. The one-way price is normally $7 and $2.50 for every large bag.
What to Bring to St. John
St. John’s travel must-haves include sunscreen, a camera, and insect repellent. Most other items are available but cost a little more. This is the same as food, but you can buy almost everything in the city on a good budget.
The city has several great grocery stores where you can purchase anything from baked goods and produce to seafood and steaks. If you prefer eating out, there are several restaurants to select from and even in-villa chef services and drop-off dinners.
A Cell Phone on St John
If you carry your cellphone, ensure your cellular company has a contractual agreement with AT&T, Sprint Wireless, or a carrier. The villa phone is for local calls, so ensure to bring along a calling card with an 800 number.
Internet Access
Most of the homes on the Virgin Islands have high-speed internet access. So, if you carry your laptop and find a home without internet access, there are hot spots and web cafes throughout the city.
Car Rental and Driving on the Left
There are plenty of car rental services around, but remember to drive on the left and at a maximum speed limit of around 20 MPH.
