I read something once that said you knew you were a grownup because you had to decide what to have for dinner every night – it’s so hard isn’t it? How do you decide on something tasty and varied… Every.. Single.. Day! For me, it’s also about keeping the family entertained. I’m not a parent, but my partner’s daughter stays with us for holidays and weekends – and as a typical teenager, keeping her entertained can be tough. That said, if it’s got TikTok and social media involved, she’s far more interested!
So, I wanted to write about how the internet can help keep the whole family entertained.
Watching Movies
We love a movie night in this house and have both Amazon Prime and Netflix. We all have different tastes in films so choosing something can be tricky, but actually far easier than when I was a teenager and TV choice was whatever we had on video or whatever was on TV right then… None of this on-demand stuff, kids just don’t understand how easy they have it do they? I like to get some snacks and a blanket and make it a really fun film night. Admittedly, we sometimes lose the teenager halfway through as the pull of being in her room & on the phone with her friends become to much, but it’s a start.
Playing Games
When I first moved here, we had some really fun nights just playing cards; but now we use the Internet for games instead. Okay, I know it means time in front of the screen but when places like Plays.org have so many games to choose from, it really is understandable. Card games are great, but graphics on a computer game are something else and help to keep the attention of even the most easily distracted teenager, trust me – I speak from experience!
We use the Games.org website simply because it’s so easy to use & has so many different games. Sometimes we’ll play separate games and other times we’ll play the same one and swap hints and tips. I’ve noticed that their new in section is often updated, even over the weekend so there’s never a reason for anyone to be bored, as they have so many different games to choose from. They always tease me about how fast I type, so our latest one has been to see who can type quickest on their Fast Typer Game, safe to say we’re pretty competitive!

Choosing Dinner
And then we go back to the age-old problem of choosing something that everyone wants for dinner every evening. We’ve recently bought a Ninja Foodi (highly recommended) and have cooked up a few things – even a fake BBQ last weekend when the sun was shining! I set challenges for people in the house to choose what they might like to cook, or we sit and browse the internet for inspiration on what we can cook for fun – cakes, bread, unusual pancake toppings etc.
I grew up with the internet and have always used it, but I will say that it was never as entertaining as it is now. With social media, games, movies and a wealth of information available online it is no wonder that everyone is turning to the internet for entertaining the family.
If you have any tips for keeping the family entertained, I’d love to hear them!
