If you’re planning a long journey with children then one of the things you’re bound to be considering is how to keep your kids entertained travelling. Being sat in one spot, all crammed into one space and without the ability to run around and burn off energy can be tough for kids. Without the right sort of entertainment children will simply be frustrated and whiny, which makes for a miserable road trip for all of those involved, so here are some tips.
Get Them Involved
If your children are slightly older then get them involved in the journey – keep them up to date with where you are and even how many junctions you need to pass until you’re next turn off. Get them to keep an eye out for any landmarks that show you’re getting near to your destination. You could also play a game – who can spot the most red cars or who will be the first to spot an Eddie Stobart lorry for example. Anything that keeps them busy and helps pass the time is good!
Have Lots of Things To Keep The Entertained
Get organised and packing a bag of little things for them to do throughout the journey is a really good idea – don’t give your game away and let them know what you have in advance. Instead, keep it under wraps and you can pull out things to entertain them as and when they are needed – for example, when you can feel them getting bored and you want to keep them quiet – just as this website suggests. They have a really good activity tray that comes with a range of activity sheets and things to do – it’s designed to sit safely on a lap and give your children a firm surface to draw or colour on, so great for long journey’s in the back of the car.
Bring Snacks
As well as things to on a road trip, you need to bring plenty for them to eat. Kids will often associate hunger with boredom and the last thing you want is to be stopping on the time to stock up on expensive service station food. Instead, put some fruit in Tupperware, pack some crisps, bring along some treats and use these to help keep your kids happy while you’re travelling.
Wear Them Out
Although this isn’t strictly a way to keep them entertained throughout the journey, it will make the journey easier for everyone. Travel at a time when they are tired and likely to fall asleep, or take them for a long walk first to burn off some energy. When they’re feeling worn out they are far less likely to be fussy about being sat in one place for a long period of time.
