5 Places to Visit with Foster Children in Essex

Colchester Zoo

If you’re fostering in Essex, you’ve got one of the best zoos in the UK right on your doorstep. Colchester Zoo in Essex is home to 200 species of animals from all over the world, so it’s a great opportunity to provide your foster children with a unique experience. Alongside the animals, you can get involved with keeper talks and animal feeding sessions.

Adventure Island

Adventure Island has more than 40 rides and attractions from ghost trains to rollercoasters, and the best part is you don’t have to pay for entry. Located on the Western Esplanade in Southend-on-Sea, the park is open through the entire summer, but operation times may vary throughout the week.

If you’re planning to visit Adventure Island with your foster children, we recommend arriving early to beat the crowds. Additionally, you should wear comfortable clothes and be prepared to take regular breaks because you’ll be walking for a long time. To save money and avoid unnecessary crowds, we recommend taking a picnic.

Audley End House and Gardens

Treat your foster children to a healthy dose of history by visiting Audley End House and Gardens in Essex which is a Jacobean stately home located in Saffron Walden. It’s one of the largest English Heritage houses open to the public.

The house was built in the 17th century by the 1st Earl of Suffolk, Thomas Howard. It is the greatest representation of Jacobean architecture in all of England. The house is surrounded by stunning gardens designed by Humphry Repton in the 18th century, so make sure you spend time taking everything in.

Colchester Castle

Continuing with the theme of history brings us to Colchester Castle, which is an impressive Norman castle and one of the oldest standing in England. Throughout history, it’s been used as a prison, a fortress, and a courthouse, so there’s plenty for your foster children to learn about.

Today, the castle is a museum telling the story of Colchester’s Roman past. You can also explore the keep, which offers amazing views of the city and beyond. As well as this, there are many family-friendly events held throughout the year including Roman gladiator and Viking re-enactments.

Mountfitchet Castle Experience

Mountfitchet Castle Experience is an open-air museum that takes visitors back 900 years to witness medieval Motte and Bailey Castle. This attraction is open 7 days a week from March to November, and there’s plenty to see including meeting the animals roaming the grounds freely. Your foster children will also enjoy climbing up the keep and learning about the people who once lived there during the Middle Ages.

Essex is an incredible county to visit with your foster children and the rest of the family. People of all ages will find an activity to enjoy, whether that be a theme park or something more historical.
