What are lab-grown diamonds?

January 17, 2023 by Debz Louise Leave a Comment

What are lab-grown diamonds? When it comes to diamonds, the conversation has shifted from the traditional A diamond is forever to one of sustainability and ethical sourcing. Lab-grown diamonds, created using extreme heat or pressure in factories, are being marketed as being more environmentally friendly and socially responsible. These synthetic diamonds are also becoming more accessible, with prices roughly 30% cheaper than mined diamonds.

How are lab grown diamonds made?

Lab-grown diamonds, also known as synthetic or cultured diamonds, are becoming a stylish and sustainable choice for discerning consumers. These diamonds are created in a controlled laboratory environment using advanced technology, with two main methods used to grow them: High-Pressure High Temperature (HPHT) and Chemical Vapour Deposition (CVD). Both methods mimic the conditions in which natural diamonds form, resulting in diamonds that are chemically, physically, and optically the same as their natural counterparts.

Why are lab grown diamonds cheaper?

While lab-grown diamonds may be less expensive than natural diamonds due to the lack of scarcity and mining costs, they are no less beautiful. In fact, they are becoming increasingly popular for their environmental and ethical advantages. As lab-grown diamonds become increasingly available in the market, they may be indistinguishable from natural diamonds to the naked eye, but advanced testing equipment can identify them. So, lab-grown diamonds are a chic and conscious choice whether you’re looking for a sparkling engagement ring or a statement necklace.

Lab-grown are the future?

However, not everyone agrees that lab-grown diamonds are the future of the industry. Diamond industry analyst Paul Zimnisky notes that while lab-grown diamonds may democratise the market, they lack the emotional punch of earth-mined diamonds. He also predicts that consumers will be willing to pay more for traceable, high-quality lab-grown diamonds made with renewable energy, as opposed to cheaper stones grown in factories in China.

On the other hand, the Natural Diamond Council, a group of elite diamond miners, is working to promote the integrity of the modern diamond jewellery industry and to educate and protect consumers.

While the environmental impact of large-scale diamond mining in Africa, Australia, Brazil, Canada, and Russia cannot be denied, some argue that shifting the entire industry to lab-grown factories is not the solution. Cristina Villegas, director of the Mines to Markets program at NGO Pact, states that walking away from responsible miners in far-flung communities and prioritising jobs in the global north is literally the opposite of responsible sourcing.

How to detect lab grown diamonds?

As the demand for sustainable and ethically-sourced fine jewellery continues to rise, how can one tell the difference between a natural diamond and a lab-grown one?

First and foremost, a natural diamond will have a certificate from a reputable diamond grading laboratory such as the Gemological Institute of America (GIA), the American Gem Society (AGS), or the International Gemological Institute (IGI). Lab-grown diamonds, however, do not require a certification process, so the absence of a certificate may indicate that a diamond is lab-grown.

Advanced diamond testing equipment can also detect the presence of specific trace elements or other characteristics that are unique to natural or lab-grown diamonds. Spectroscopy and microscopy can also be used to examine a diamond’s chemical impurities or structural defects, which can help determine the origin of a diamond.

It’s important to note that some lab-grown diamonds may be treated, enhanced or coated to improve their appearance, and these treatments are not always detectable by the naked eye or with standard testing equipment. For proper identification, it’s best to consult an accredited laboratory.

lab-grown diamonds

As the world of fine jewellery continues to evolve, the question of whether to choose a lab-grown diamond or a natural diamond is becoming increasingly relevant. Lab-grown diamonds are becoming a stylish and sustainable choice for discerning consumers. They are cheaper and can be grown using 100 per cent renewable energy. They are also chemically identical to natural diamonds. However, their investment value has yet to be proven, and they don’t currently have an inherent positive social impact, nor do they support millions of livelihoods.

There is also a lack of transparency in how much energy they use. On the other hand, natural diamonds are a finite resource, so their rarity is inherent. However, mining is carbon intensive, often relying on diesel-run machinery, and diamond mining uses large amounts of water, energy, and earth. Additionally, a small percentage of diamonds mined in unregulated conditions still make it into the general supply chain.

So, whether you choose a lab-grown diamond or a natural diamond, it’s important to be mindful of the environmental and ethical implications of your choice. And it’s always best to consult an accredited laboratory to make sure that you are getting what you paid for.
