With the colder weather fast approaching it’s time to ditch the vest tops and flip flops and get out more sensible clothing for the cold weather. With the rising costs of energy bills wrapping up warm is going to be more important than ever. Here are 5 things you need in your winter wardrobe.
A Winter Coat
Traditionally I have never been a coat wearer; the extra layer of clothing wasn’t something that I ever loved. I think a large part of this was more to do with the sizes of coats that were available – after all, I’m a size 30/32 and as this is the maximum size available there was no scope to size up and make things a little more comfortable. However, these days there are many more options and so I’ve invested in a cheeky little waterproof jacket which is brilliant for the cold, wet weather.
Plenty of Layers
Autumn is a great time for wearing layers, especially as the weather can be a little unpredictable. One minute it’s rainy and freezing cold and the next the sun has come out and it’s warmed up. Layering up means you always have the option to take off a layer or put another on – and therefore you know you’re always going to feel a comfortable temperature.

Decent Shoes
Does anyone remember ballet pumps back in the day? They were all the trend and I loved them! However, step in a puddle and they basically disintegrated into nothing and you were left with a soggy mess of a shoe. These days I tend to look for boots for women when it comes to winter shoes, or comfortable trainers that I know are going to be fine if I trample through a bit of mud on the way to where I’m going. If you’re looking for something that is both practical and stylish then platform boots can be the perfect compromise between the two.
Fluffy Socks
Although I am definitely more of a fan of summer, when it comes to winter I do love being able to wear fluffy socks and comfortable pyjamas and sit on the sofa with a massive blanket – Lola’s a fan of the blanket too so it keeps everyone happy! There’s nothing worse than spending your time at home feeling the cold, so getting your hands on as many fluffy and warm items of clothing as possible is a must.
Moisturiser
This might not technically be a wardrobe item, but if your skin is anything like mine in the winter then it really suffers. My skin particularly dislikes central heating and if I have had the heating on for a day or two it starts to feel really dry and uncomfortable. The cold weather and whipping winds don’t do it much good either. To combat this I up the amount of moisturiser that I use during the cold months and it really does make a differecne.
Of course, there are lots of things that you could say are winter essentials – umbrellas, scarfs, gloves etc. The best thing you can do is invest in the things that keep you warm and happy when the weather is colder. Everyone is different, so if your ideal winter outfit is a jumper dress and tights then that’s just as fine as if your winter outfit is jeans and a top- whatever goes, let’s get through the winter together and count down to the warm months coming back to us next year!
If you have any ideas for things you need in your winter wardrobe I’d love you to share them
