Trying a New Sport – We all crave accomplishment. And there’s something extra rewarding about picking up a new sport: padel, skiing, or hot yoga. Each option is as intriguing as the next. So, what’s stopping us? From the intimidation of becoming a beginner to feeling overwhelmed at squeezing another commitment in the diary, it’s all too easy to delay starting a new sport. That’s why it’s important to learn the benefits.

Trying a New Sport

Trying a New Sport

Here’s what you could gain from braving that new sport… even when learning in your 30s or 40s.

Boost Your Physical Health

We all know it, but it’s worth hearing again. Learning a new sport is the perfect way to boost your physical health. Sports like tennis, cycling, and horse riding improve cardiovascular fitness, balance, and strength. If you’re specifically seeking low-impact exercise, swimming comes with a whole host of benefits without joint strain.

There’s no time like the present. Besides, contrary to how many of us feel on a Monday morning, your 30s and 40s aren’t “silver years”. Research found that 70 is actually the new 50, with people staying cognitively and physically fit for longer. Get up and get going!

Experience Adventure and Travel Opportunities

Sports don’t just open doors for friendships; learning new skills is a ticket for adventure. Imagine ski holidays in the Alps, scuba diving in Thailand, or cycling through windmilled landscapes in the Netherlands.

Sports are an international skill and come with a whole host of travel opportunities. We’re all craving novelty more than ever, and these activity holidays are fantastic for bonding on family holidays. You won’t be stuck for ideas when using your next annual leave.

Improve Mental Wellbeing

Did you know that cognitive function is protected by brain plasticity? Research by Harvard has found that learning new movements helps exercise the brain, boosting plasticity and promoting long-term health. That new sport could be the perfect opportunity to strengthen your cognitive health.

Sports also benefit mental well-being. Exercise releases neurotransmitters like dopamine, which helps keep anxiety and depression at bay. You don’t need to be “perfect” at tennis or a “pro” at cycling. Simply showing up is enough, and mentally, you’ll soon feel the difference.

Meet New People and Build Community

Community matters. When times are tough, nothing beats having a shoulder to cry on, and when you reach exciting milestones, it’s amazing to have friends to celebrate with. Making friends is easy during school, university, and even when you’re fresh in the workforce. In your 30s and 40s, it takes a little extra work, which is why joining sports groups is so fantastic.

Meeting new people is a refreshing opportunity to add positive connections to your life. Besides, socialising is a great motivator when exercising.

Let’s be honest. You probably already have a sport in mind. It can feel challenging to learn something new in your 30s and 40s, but set your doubts aside and focus on the benefits. Pick something that fosters joy, and start small.
