British Plus Size Fashion

June 13, 2016 by Debz Louise Leave a Comment

This weekend I was introduced to two new plus size brands, and seeing as I have nothing to do tonight but watch Coronation Street and eat cake from Home Sweet Home I thought I would throw together a blog post. The shops don’t quite do my size, but with many options up to a size 26, I thought I’d write to you about them!

Lucy Alice

I know that for many people finding workwear is a real struggle. Over recent years we’ve really improved plus size fashion options but tailoring and smart wear still seems to fall far behind. Lucy Alice have loads of options, so I’d recommend giving their website a browse.

When I checked their website they seemed to have a majority of suits available in plus sizes which is always a good thing if you ask me! So, if you’re looking for an interview outfit or a new suit for work then I’d recommend giving them a look!

David Nieper

Although not one of the cheapest brands, David Nieper have a range of luxury ladieswear clothing. I know that fast fashion is the choice of many, but it’s always nice to have more options. The dresses are a little ‘older’ style looking than I would usually wear but I think they could be styled really nicely.

Both of these brands manufacture their clothing in Britain, which I know is something many of you care about!

I’ve added both of these to my list of plus size retailers, because I didn’t realise I was missing any – if there’s any brands so I should add, give me a shout!

Lady Voluptuous: Maria – You Gotta See Her

May 30, 2016 by Debz Louise Leave a Comment

If you’re a reader of my blog then you’ll know that I am a big fan of Lady V London and their plus size range Lady Voluptuous. This weekend I attended a wedding in Chester and so of course for a few weeks before I saw searching the internet for something appropriate to wear.

Plus size wedding guest outfits aren’t always easy to come by and I knew I wanted something beautiful and unusual, so I knew I had my work cut out for me. Then Lady Voluptuous announced their Spring/Summer release of dresses and I knew I’d be able to find something.

In case you don’t know the Lady Voluptuous range of dresses are all vintage dresses designed by Georgina from Fuller Figure Fuller Bust – all go up to a size 32.

So far from the Lady Voluptuous range I have the Estella, Ursula, Marilyn, Medusa, Bellatrix, Phoebe (in two prints) and now the Maria – I love them all for different reasons.

I chose the Maria because of the unusual pattern. I loved the idea of owning a mustard dress (I think she is my first) and the purple roses finished it off perfectly. I really like the neckline and the length of the dress too.  She comes complete with a belt that ties around the back to pull in the dress around the middle, which is a shape I really like.

There are still a couple of Lady Voluptuous dresses that I’d like to get but I have yet to decide what my next purchase will be!

One thing I wanted to touch upon is the fact that when you buy a dress, you’ll probably never look like the model on the website. There are lots of people who worry about this and I wanted to tell you to STOP! It’s OK not to look like the girl the website, because you look perfectly exactly as you are!

Which Lady Voluptuous dress is your favourite?

Your Fat Body & You. You Are Allowed To Exist

April 17, 2016 by Debz Louise Leave a Comment

Hiiii

I realise that it has been a while since I posted anything “real” and I apologise. Do I need to apologise? Probably not! I actually apologise to myself the most – blogging is something that I really enjoy and I can’t believe I let it slip. Today I had a reminder that it’s nearly a year since WE trended on Twitter and hit loads of national press with #WeAreTheThey. It made me realise how much I loved all of this – it relit my fire I guess!

Anyway, I wanted to write about fat bodies and how we should demand more for them. I know that coming to grips with the word fat was very easy for me. I sort of always knew that it was just a word and therefore nothing to worry about. I know that there are lots of you that feel the same. However knowing that the word can’t hurt you but actually navigating the world in a fat body can be two very different things. So, I wanted to put together a few words about demanding more for you and your body.

You Will Take Up Space

It is fact that as a larger person you will take up more space than someone smaller – just as taller people do over shorter people. It can be a really bad habit to get into when you start apologising for this, but it is also so easy to do. When you sit down & take up more space than someone else, you automatically want to apologise for it. When someone has to move out of the way you want to say sorry for the inconvenience. Yes, manners are important and you should thank someone for moving so you can pass/sit but you ARE ALLOWED to take up space, so don’t apologise for it.

Sometimes You Just Won’t Fit

Depending on you size, you might enter places when you just don’t fit in. Booths in restaurants for example. In circumstances like this it is easy to apologise for your body or simply sit quietly uncomfortable and just make do. The truth is that you ARE ALLOWED to sit comfortably while you eat. Simply tell the people you are with that you would prefer a table and get people to move. It can be scary at first, but once you have done it and realise that people will move without even batting an eyelid, it does get easier.

You Can Look Good

Gone are the days of fat bodies just having to make do. If there is a store that refuse to stock your size simply move on to another. Yes, I know when it comes to plus size fashion it isn’t always that easy but there are more options being introduced all the time. You ARE ALLOWED to look good.

You’re Entitled To Healthcare

One of the things I read about most on plus size Facebook groups is the reluctance to seek medical advice because they feel the issue will just be blamed on their weight. Whilst I think we should recognise that sometimes weight can cause problems, not everything is affected. Don’t be afraid to say to your doctor “Yes, I know I am overweight but I’d really like to concentrate on XXX today”. You ARE ALLOWED to look after your health.

Lastly – Love Your Body

I can not stress this enough – Your body is worthy of love – both yours and someone elses. You ARE ALLOWED to love your body, in fact I recommend it!

I am sure there are lots more and I will probably revisit the topic again, but just know
you are allowed to exist and you are allowed to be happy!

February 15, 2016 by Debz Louise Leave a Comment

This morning saw the launch of the much-awaited Beth Ditto collection. As with any plus size fashion brand, I waited excitedly to be able to click the link and see what is available. I already knew that the pieces would be out of my price range but I knew that a range by a powerhouse such as Beth would be important.

A New Look For Valentines

January 29, 2016 by Debz Louise Leave a Comment

Despite forever being a resident of Singleville, I do love the thought of getting a bit mushy at Valentines Day. Don’t worry, if you don’t have a partner then you can still enjoy the day – there’s nothing wrong with spoiling yourself and giving yourself a treat. Valentines is all about love and after all, who is the most important person in your life deserving of love?

I thought I would have a look at some new outfits for Valentines just incase I decide to take myself on a day date or simply use Valentines as an excuse to buy a new dress!

I am really lucky, my local New Look Store has a decent selection of New Look Inspire so I often have the opportunity to pop in for a browse. I really like these 3 dresses because they’re nice and simple – and can easily be dressed up or dressed down.

What I also like about a trip to New Look is their selection of shoes. They always have a good few racks of wide fit shoes so there is always a pair to grab and always at a decent price too!

I’d quite like to make an outfit with with the burgundy dress and the leopard print shoes, I think that’d be a really lovely look. With the right jewellery and bag it could even be made into a night look, depending on where your Valentine is planning to take you.

Then of course, while you’re browsing the store or website you can pick up some accessories to make everything perfect.

So, tell me – what are your plans for Valentines?

Is Life Really Too Short To Wear Boring Clothes?

January 24, 2016 by Debz Louise Leave a Comment

Today I am asking myself

Plus Size Fashion – Do We Always Have To Be Revolutionary?

There is a well known saying that life is too short to wear boring clothes. It’s often pictured on memes and pops up on my social media feeds. The question I have been asking myself is, who made that rule?

Over the last few weeks we have seen fat bodies celebrated more than ever. Yes, we still have a way to go but there have been several publications celebrating plus size bodies and the way they look. We have seen people and their bodies celebrated for their bravery and the way they dress which is nothing less than fantastic.

A lot of the time we celebrate bodies that are really making a stand – we see underwear shots, crop tops, short skirts and more shared amongst ourselves. It really is fantastic that people want to wear these clothes and that we’re starting to see attitudes change towards those that start to wear them!

However, my wardrobe is pretty boring in the grand scheme of things and I don’t want to apologise for that. If I want to wear butterfly patterned dresses with leggings and want to shy away from crop tops, that’s OK too! Most days I wear a dress and leggings – sometimes with trainers, sometimes with shoes and if I am feeling particularity sassy I’ll team it up with some ankle boots.

Yes, life is short and most of us could probably do more to make the most of it however don’t let anyone make you feel that you’re doing something wrong because you have  a “boring” wardrobe.

One of the nicest things about fashion is that we have choice – and more and more those choices are sneaking their way to into plus size fashion. If you want to wear a crop top and booty shorts I’ll fight pretty much to the death for your right to do so, but also if you want to wear a hanky hem tunic top and leggings that’s more than OK too!

We’re starting to see lots of strong men and weep seep through to our social media influences which is nothing less than amazing. But please don’t put yourself down if you’re not someone who wants to show off their belly or if you prefer to wear something that covers your arms – your body is yours to dress how you wish and please do not let anyone tell you otherwise!

What is your favourite ‘boring’ outfit?
