A Visit to A Submarine Museum

The Submarine Museum in Gosport, located on the historic waterfront of Portsmouth Harbor, offers a fascinating journey into the world of underwater warfare. Housed within the iconic HMS Alliance, a retired World War II-era submarine, the museum provides visitors with a unique opportunity to explore the cramped quarters and intricate machinery that once defined life aboard a submarine.

A Visit to A Submarine Museum

Opened in 1981, the Submarine Museum boasts an impressive collection of artefacts, exhibits, and interactive displays that chronicle the evolution of submarines and their pivotal role in naval history. The highlight of the museum is undoubtedly the HMS Alliance herself, a meticulously preserved submarine that served in the Royal Navy from the 1940s through the Cold War. Visitors can step aboard and experience the challenges faced by submariners, gaining a firsthand appreciation for their courage and resilience.

In addition to the historic vessels, the museum offers insights into the technological advancements that have shaped submarine design over the years. From early prototypes to modern nuclear-powered submarines, the exhibits provide a comprehensive overview of submarine development and innovation.

If you are planning a trip to the area and want to discover more local gems or stay up to date with community events, be sure to check out the Portsmouth Hub. It’s a fantastic resource for anyone looking to make the most of their visit to this historic coastal city and its surrounding attractions.

It goes without saying that these submarines are not the easiest to access and there certainly isn’t loads of space, so I knew I’d want something comfortable to wear while I was there. I opted for this lovely ‘Floral Print Off Shoulder Shirred Ruffle Hem Dress’ from Shein (Item Number sf2203011196189398). It goes up to a UK 24 and currently is less than ÂŁ13, so really affordable. It’s a thin material which means it’s probably more suited for Spring and Summer, but with a coat on I was perfectly warm!

How cute are these foxes that live at the museum!? So cute & friendly!

FAQs

Is the Royal Navy Submarine Museum accessible for plus-size visitors?

Yes, but with caveats! The museum itself is spacious, but the HMS Alliance submarine tour involves very cramped quarters and narrow walkways. I wore a stretchy, shirred dress to ensure I could move comfortably through the tighter sections.

What is the best thing to wear for the submarine tour?

I recommend something with stretch. I opted for a shirred floral dress from Shein. Because you’ll be navigating narrow hatches and machinery, avoid anything too bulky or restrictive. If it’s cold, a light coat is easy to manage, but the submarine interior can feel quite close.

Can you actually go inside the submarines?

Absolutely! The highlight of the visit is stepping aboard the HMS Alliance. You get to see the living quarters, the galley, and the engine rooms, which gives you a real appreciation for the courage of the submariners who lived there.
