It’s Just A Curvy Convention With Voyeuristic Intention

May 18, 2015 by Debz Louise 4 Comments

On Saturday I attended the very first Curvy Convention in London and I have to say that I had a great day!

As ever I expect there to be a barrage of blogger reviews and photos online so I don’t want to talk too much about the day because I think you can read that anywhere! I have to say though, that the day was much better than I expected, for the first-ever one it did great. One thing I would say is that the range of models they used was brilliant – I am sure you’ll see in everyone’s photos that there were short, tall, of all sizes, ages and colours which was fantastic. I felt it was a shame that the largest model was a size 26 I would love to have seen the brands showcasing their items in all of the sizes they sold – IE a size 32. But as I mused over the event yesterday I wondered if there were other ‘representations’ that were missed which I didn’t notice because I was too busy thinking about myself. But overall, the range of models was noticeably varied and fantastic!

The Sense of Community

I joke about attending the Curvy Convention with voyeuristic intention, but it is a little like that. There are not many places you can go where you can see hundreds of women who look just like you! I love that I can lust over dresses and ask people where they got them from, with a strong chance that I will be able to wear it too! Watching catwalks, getting up close and personal with brands and chatting to the people who make and sell you your clothes is fantastic. You can speak to them about what you would like to see and they can tell you about their plans it’s brilliant.

Me and the Topsy Curvy Girls, Blogger Babes, Lucia, myself and Kat (Thanks for the pic!)

I wrote a long soppy post on Facebook last night, but I really want to repeat it here.

I always feel lucky for the inspirational people I have in my life – but then I remember I put myself there. Rather than listen to prejudices and the media about my body and lifestyle choices I sought out a community that simply says ‘it’s ok to be you’. And I tell you now, those 5 words are so powerful. I spent yesterday surrounded by amazing plus size women showcasing fashion – not just clothing options but real, forward thinking fashion for fat bodies. You can tell me it’s not needed or wrong but hundreds of women in that room will tell you differently. Being in a room of women who lift each other up (so many people coming up to me about ‪#‎wearethethey‬) is amazing. I then spent the evening drinking rum, tequila and sambuca in a room full of people who I would never have met if it wasn’t for this funny little fat world we’ve worked hard to carve for ourselves. Feeling a bit soppy but the point is don’t ever feel that because you don’t fit in that you are wrong. Instead find (or build) a community of people who think just like you – it’ll change your life. Possibly still drunk but #wearethethey and we’re stronger than Jamelia’s words

Lucie Fat Beauty, Caroline Curvy Wordy, Sam Fatty Boom Tatty and Georgina She Might Be Loved

The truth is that the community WE HAVE made is fantastic. We have come together to create something special and yes, we can’t all arrange events but the fact that we travel to attend them, work together to promote them and generally get together to make them work makes me so happy. It might just be a few times a year but these events are fantastic and I can only hope that everyone has a chance to find something just as special in their lives! I can’t wait to go back to Curvy Con next year!

See you at Style XL?

The Nadia Aboulhosn Collection

May 11, 2015 by Debz Louise 1 Comment

So, you may have seen over recent weeks that legendary blogger Nadia Aboulhosn teamed up with Boohoo to bring out a capsule collection of clothing. My first thoughts were WOW! The collection is young, edgy and in my eyes a welcome addition to the world of plus size fashion. My second thoughts were that it was a shame that the collection only went up to a size 24. I lust over many items on Boohoo and I can only hope (and pray!) that one day they extend their collection to be more suitable to me and people my size.

The generous people at Boohoo allowed me to pick an item from the collection to try. There are SO many items I wanted but I had to be sensible. I knew that the items would come up 3-4 sizes too small for me, so I had to be clever and get an item that worked for me.

So, I went for this white embossed sleeve hoodie. Now, I know it is not the most exciting item from the collection but actually it really works for me. It is a thickish material but also quite lightweight, so I am finding it perfect for this weather. I love the almost oversized feel and it is an item that I have gotten quite a lot of use out of in the few weeks I have had it!

That said, if you’re a size 24 or smaller then I know that there is going to be something perfect for you, so make sure you head over to the website and browse the collection.

What do you have your eyes on?

Spending My Weekend in Style (XL)

May 10, 2015 by Debz Louise 3 Comments

Weekend in Style -I have spoken before about the merits of plus size blogger events and how much I enjoy them. Style XL is taking place in the Midlands once again this summer so I thought I’d let you all know. I went to the very first Style XL last year in Leicester and had a brilliant time! This year it’s a 2 day event at the Paragon Hotel in Birmingham and it looks like there is plenty planned!

The Infamous Tess Dress – Yours Clothing

May 4, 2015 by Debz Louise 9 Comments

Ahhh… The Tess Dress! I spotted this dress a few months ago when I headed to Birmingham to meet Tess Munster. In fact, you might remember that a group of us bloggers all wore this dress and posed for a photo with Tess! I loved the dress then but it only went up to a size 26. This meant it fitted but not quite as comfortably as I would have liked so I didn’t buy it 🙁 [Read more…]

They Shouldn’t Wear That – But I Always Will #WeAreTheThey

April 29, 2015 by Debz Louise 9 Comments

Unless you have been on Mars for the past week you will have seen that something quite amazing has happened with a little hashtag I started – #WeAreTheThey.

I decided that I wanted to keep the movement going and so tonight we’re once again hitting blog posts and social media! The idea behind the set of posts this evening is what ‘they’ shouldn’t wear. What size body you have, there are usually a set of rules put to you to help you dress ‘better’. Whether that’s to accentuate your curves, stop you from looking to short or avoiding heels if you’re tall. I say stuff that and where what you want.

Browse the #WeAreTheThey hashtag tonight and you’ll see a whole range of beautiful, amazing women showing you exactly how they break fashion rules! Why not add your own?

Do Not Wear Short Dresses

Avoid Stripes

Don’t Wear Oversized Swing Dresses

You’re Too Fat For Primark

The only rule you should listen to when it comes to dressing yourself is whether you want to wear it or not!

Here’s What I Would Have Spent: Topshop

April 27, 2015 by Debz Louise 3 Comments

Here’s What I Would Have Spent: Topshop – As you know every few weeks I get together a bunch of bloggers to do a Here’s What I Would Have Spent. This time I wanted to do Topshop. They do up to a size 16 although looking at it they tend to do many items up to a size 12/14. They have some lovely items on their website so it is a shame they don’t do a larger range of sizes. Prices are affordable although not on the same wave length as Primark etc – obviously! [Read more…]

When Retailers Get It Right – #WeAreTheThey

April 24, 2015 by Debz Louise 2 Comments

A really, really quick blog post today, my world has gone crazy! So many people are supporting are #WeAreTheThey and it’s amazing. Today it’s been featured on The Huffington Post, Look Magazine, Plus Size Model Magazine, The Daily Telegraph and so many other places. So much positivity and I am in love with everyone who supports it.

As if on cue Lady V London have bought out a brand new range of dresses under their Lady Voluptuous umbrella. If you are new to my blog then have a read through old Lady V London blog posts – I have shouted my love for them from the rooftops many times!

The new dress is called Phoebe and she is beautiful!

The reason I wanted to rush out a blog post about them is because as a collective Lady V London stock dresses from a size 8 right up to a size 32. There are a few retailers that stock a fantastic range of sizes but a brand that stocks size 8 to 32 is literally amazing to me.

Over the last few days we have seen the #WeAreTheThey take off as living proof that we do need something like this. It is proof that as women we need clothing ranges that suit us and that small sizes, big sizes and everything in between.

Personally I think I need the flamingo dress in my life, but they’re all beautiful – There are also new versions of the Cossette dress!

#WeAreTheThey and we need fashion just as much as anyone else!

Lady V London you did good!
