How Can I Switch Off When I’m Working From Home – While working from home means that you can get out of bed later and avoid the busy commuter traffic, there are some downsides of ditching office life. Try to work only in one room

When working from home, one of our biggest tips is to try to limit how many rooms in the house you do work in. If possible you should try to avoid working in your bedroom as this will make it more difficult to shut off from work when you are lying in bed trying to get to sleep at night.

Instead, try to only do work from one room in the house, and create your own workspace where you can store all your work equipment when you clock off. This way, your brain will associate that specific area with your work, enhancing your productivity during work hours whilst simultaneously allowing you to leave the office behind when the evening rolls around.

Switch off your work phone at the end of the day

When working from home it can be too tempting to keep checking your work phone for updates and work emails. However, the more you do this the harder you will find it to switch off from work.

Phones are a distraction at the best of times, but the last thing you need when you’re trying to cook a family meal or enjoy the latest episode of your favourite Netflix drama is a work email notification that sends your brain straight into office mode. To be productive and effective at work, your brain needs a chance to switch off and reset.

Therefore, we recommend that you switch off your work phone as soon as your shift ends so that you can’t be tempted to keep checking in. If you work from your personal phone then make sure that you turn off work-related notifications so you can enjoy your time off.

Make time for yourself

After a busy day working from home it is crucial that you spend your evenings looking after yourself and getting the rest you need. So no matter how busy it is at work, don’t be tempted to work late as that will eat into your important downtime.

Instead, we recommend that you get out of your working clothes as soon as 5 o’clock comes and get into your comfy loungewear and fluffy socks. This will help you split up the day and signify that work is over and it is time to switch off.

Alternatively, if you prefer a busy social life, make sure you’ve got plans scheduled during the evenings so you can’t work later than your allocated hours. This could be a group trip to the cinema, a catch-up call on Zoom, or a dinner date with a friend. Making yourself accountable to other people will prevent you from working through the evening, and will allow you to enjoy a healthy work/life balance.

How Can I Switch Off When I’m Working From Home

It can be difficult to switch off from work when you are working from home, but by following these tips and being more disciplined when your working day ends, you can enjoy your evenings and get the rest and downtime that you need.
