Spotting the Signs

This prep school in Surrey suggests that children often struggle to express how they’re feeling, which can make it difficult to recognise when something’s wrong. Keep an eye out for changes in behaviour, such as:

  • Withdrawal from family or friends
  • Sudden mood swings or irritability
  • Difficulty sleeping or changes in appetite
  • A drop in academic performance
  • Loss of interest in hobbies or activities they usually enjoy

These signs don’t always indicate a mental health problem, but they are worth noting – especially if they persist for more than a few weeks.

Start the Conversation

It’s important to create an environment where your child feels safe to open up. Try to check in regularly, even during busy periods. Ask open-ended questions like, “How have you been feeling lately?” or “Is anything bothering you at school?”

Be patient. If your child isn’t ready to talk straight away, let them know you’re always there when they are. Sometimes just knowing they’re not alone can be incredibly reassuring.

Promote Healthy Habits

Encouraging good daily routines can have a huge impact on your child’s mental wellbeing. Make sure they’re getting:

  • Enough sleep – teenagers especially need 8–10 hours per night
  • Regular physical activity – even a short walk can lift their mood
  • A balanced diet – eating well fuels both the body and mind
  • Screen time limits – help them set boundaries around digital usage

Modelling these habits yourself can also reinforce their importance.

Know When to Seek Help

If your child’s struggles seem to be worsening, or you’re concerned about their safety, don’t hesitate to seek professional support. You could:

  • Speak to your child’s GP
  • Contact their school’s pastoral team
  • Reach out to mental health charities such as Mind

Getting help is not a sign of failure – it’s a proactive step towards your child’s recovery and long-term wellbeing.

Stay Connected

Finally, remind your child that they are loved and supported no matter what they’re going through. Celebrate their strengths, however small they may seem, and encourage them to keep talking. Being present, non-judgemental, and consistent can make a world of difference.

Remember: Supporting your child’s mental health is a journey. While there may be ups and downs, your compassion, patience, and willingness to listen can be the anchor they need during challenging times.
